Filppula nets SO winner as Lightning top Blackhawks
Oct 6, 2013 - 4:53 AM Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Valtteri Filppula scored the winner in the shootout as the Tampa Bay Lightning rallied for a 3-2 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday. In the first round, Filppula deked back and forth before lifting a forehand over Corey Crawford.
Ben Bishop then made stops on Patrick Kane and Marian Hossa for the win.
Martin St. Louis and Teddy Purcell scored less than two minutes apart in the third period while Bishop made 37 stops for the Lightning, who had opened the season with a loss in Boston on Thursday.
Kane and Brandon Saad scored in the second period for the Blackhawks, who had defeated Washington on Tuesday to open their defense of the Stanley Cup title. Crawford stopped 14 shots.
"We weathered the storm," Stamkos said. "Our goalie made some big saves. He kept us in the game. That's kind of the way this league goes."
Trailing by two goals, the Lightning made it a 2-1 game halfway through the third period as a shot from Matt Carle in the high slot was tipped on net by Steven Stamkos with the rebound going to the right circle. From there, St. Louis backhanded it in for his first of the season.
Less than two minutes later, the Lightning tied the game on the power play as St. Louis' pass from the right boards was tipped, but it went right to Purcell and he ripped it in.
After holding Tampa Bay to zero shots in the first period, Chicago did more of the same in the second period, limiting its opponents to six shots while putting two into the net.
The first goal came just 59 seconds in as several shots on net were stopped by Bishop, but Kane was there at the right side to finally put in a rebound for a 1-0 lead.
Thanks to a lucky bounce, the Blackhawks took a 2-0 lead as Nick Leddy dumped the puck into the net and it took a bounce off the backboards and came out front. With Bishop behind the net looking for a chance to push the puck along, Saad had an open net for the easy goal and his second of the year at 9:14 while on the power play.
"I thought he had a great game tonight," Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said of Saad. "I thought he had the puck a lot. He was dangerous."
