Canucks blitz Oilers
Oct 6, 2013 - 7:19 AM Vancouver, BC (SportsNetwork.com) - Five unanswered goals between the first and second periods pushed the Vancouver Canucks past the Edmonton Oilers, 6-2, and provided head coach John Tortorella with his first win with the club.Brad Richardson's short-handed goal began the run, with Dan Hamhuis, Jannik Hansen, Daniel Sedin and Ryan Kesler each following with scores in succession for Vancouver, which was coming off a 4-1 loss to the San Jose Sharks.
"That's the way we want to play," Kesler said. "We let up that early goal, but we responded right away and kept coming and they cracked."
Jason Garrison added a third period goal and Robert Luongo saved 21-of-23 shots in the victory.
The Oilers, 0-2 for the first time since 1998-99, saw Devan Dubnyk give up five goals on 31 shots. Edmonton is winless in its last six visits to Vancouver.
"If you are not going to battle and win battles and compete like every shift is your last, you are not going to win in this league," Edmonton coach Dallas Eakins said.
Jeff Petry and Boyd Gordon had tallies in the setback.
Petry scored less than two minutes into the game on wrist shot, and the Oilers looked to double their edge when they went on the power play, but Garrison stole a pass and fired to Richardson, who scored on a breakaway to tie it at 1-1.
The Canucks then scored a pair of goals in an 18-second span late in the first. Hamhuis received the puck off a faceoff and slapped one past Dubnyk. Hansen then made it 3-1 with shortly after with a wrister.
Sedin scored 7:21 into the second period on a power play goal and Kesler increased Vancouver's edge to 5-1 with just over six minutes left in the period.
Gordon tallied 1 1/2 minutes later for Edmonton to end the run, but Garrison snapped one through in third.
