Ducks win in Selanne's return to Winnipeg
Oct 7, 2013 - 4:36 AM Winnipeg, MB (SportsNetwork.com) - Corey Perry potted the game-winner with 5:31 remaining in the third, making Teemu Selanne's final trip to Winnipeg a triumphant one, as the Anaheim Ducks downed the Jets, 3-2, on Sunday at MTS Centre.Andrew Cogliano and Mathieu Perreault each scored once, while Viktor Fasth stopped 15-of-17 shots for the Ducks, who have won back-to-back games since opening the season with a 6-1 setback in Colorado.
Set to retire at season's end, the 43-year-old Selanne made what will likely be his final trip to Winnipeg, where he started his NHL career 21 years ago.
Selanne, who racked up 147 goals and 306 points in 231 games with the Jets, was honored with a video tribute during the game, prompting a standing ovation from the Winnipeg faithful.
"I've decided it is my last year and too bad we only play here once because it would be nice to play more in front of this crowd," Selanne said. "It is what it is. But who knows, maybe we play (Winnipeg) in the playoffs."
Andrew Ladd registered both Winnipeg markers, while Ondrej Pavelec allowed all three goals on 33 shots for the Jets, who were looking for their first 3-0 start in franchise history.
"I had very few players that were good in the game," Winnipeg head coach Claude Noel said. "I thought Pavelec was our best player by far."
With the score locked at 2-2 late in the third, Perry took advantage of a Winnipeg turnover to put his team on top.
Winnipeg's Zach Bogosian carried the puck behind his own net to set up the offense, but lost his edge as he fanned on an outlet pass.
The puck trickled out in front, where Perry corralled it before rifling a shot high over Pavelec to make it 3-2 at the 14:29 mark of the final frame.
Bogosian went off for boarding just over two minutes later to handcuff the Jets' comeback bid and Fasth stood tall down the stretch to secure the victory for the Ducks.
Early on, Ladd deflected a Blake Wheeler wrister past Fasth on the power play to give the Jets a 1-0 lead at 9:06 of the first frame, but Perreault answered shortly after, putting home a rebound from in front to tie the game at 10:16.
Ladd lit the lamp again in the first to give the Jets the lead, taking a carom off the end boards and ripping a one-timer from a sharp angle in the low left circle past Fasth to make it 2-1 with 3:43 left in the period.
Anaheim found the equalizer in the waning seconds of the middle stanza, with Cogliano tipping-in a Daniel Winnick wrister to tie the game at 19:55.
