Kings edge Hurricanes in SO
Oct 12, 2013 - 3:12 AM Raleigh, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Jeff Carter recorded the lone goal in the shootout as the Los Angeles Kings edged the Carolina Hurricanes, 2-1, at PNC Arena.Dwight King had a shorthanded tally for Los Angeles, while Jonathan Quick followed up a 27-save effort through regulation and overtime by stoning all three Carolina skaters in the deciding phase to help the Kings notch a second consecutive victory.
"It was a hard-fought game," said Kings center Jarret Stoll. "They've got a great team over there. They're fast, their transition game is very good and they've got a great goaltender, too. It was a battle."
Cam Ward matched Quick for the majority of night, turning aside 36-of-37 shots in a hard-luck loss. Jeff Skinner accounted for the Hurricanes' only goal, a power-play marker with under six minutes remaining in the third period.
"I thought it was a real gutsy effort for our guys coming off of that hard- fought game in Washington last night (a 3-2 Carolina win)," said Hurricanes head coach Kirk Muller. "I think that's a game that shows our team's growing together. Obviously we didn't get that extra point, but three out of four [points], that's pretty good."
After neither team managed to score over the game's first 53 minutes, each struck once within a 40-second span during a Carolina power play.
Stoll was sent off for hooking Eric Staal to give the Hurricanes the man advantage, but Carolina defenseman Justin Faulk overskated the puck in his own end to send King on a partial breakaway in which the Los Angeles forward snuck a backhander through Ward's pads with 6:34 left in regulation.
Still on a 5-on-4, the Hurricanes swiftly pulled even when Skinner knocked home a rebound of Andrej Sekera's long drive with 5:54 to go in the third period.
The Kings had an opportunity to prevail in overtime when Carolina's Jay Harrison took down Mike Richards with 2:38 remaining in the extra session. However, Los Angeles failed to get a shot on goal during the minor penalty and the game ultimately went to a shootout.
Quick made a pair of sharp saves in the initial two rounds and Carter lifted a backhander under Ward's arm to put the Hurricanes in a must-score situation. Quick then gloved Nathan Gerbe's final attempt to give the Kings the two points.
Carter is now 2-for-2 on shootout chances during the young season.
"It's worked so far, so I don't want to change it up, basically," he said of his backhand approach.
The teams battled through an evenly played but uneventful opening period, and the game remained scoreless at the end of tightly contested second as well. Ward came up with 13 saves during the middle session to keep it a 0-0 affair, while the Kings successfully killed off a hooking penalty to Robyn Regehr late in the frame.
