Scrivens blanks Panthers in first LA start
Oct 13, 2013 - 11:14 PM Sunrise, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Ben Scrivens stopped all 20 shots he faced in his Los Angeles debut, as the Kings walked away with a 3-0 decision over the Florida Panthers on Sunday.Scrivens, who was acquired from the Maple Leafs along with forward Matt Frattin and a second-round draft pick for goaltender Jonathan Bernier in late June, posted his second career whitewash against the Panthers and third career shutout.
"You can't give enough credit to the guys in front. They did a great job," Scrivens said of his defense. "All I had to focus on was stopping the puck and seeing it well."
The 27-year-old appeared in one previous game this season, a scoreless stint in relief of Jonathan Quick against Winnipeg on Oct. 4.
Dan Carcillo, Justin Williams and Jordan Nolan lit the lamp for the Kings, who have won three in a row, including the first two on their current four-game road swing.
Jacob Markstrom made 26 stops for the Panthers, who were blanked for the second time in the first six games of the season.
Following a scoreless opening 20 minutes, the visitors picked up the game's first goal with 8:46 played in the second. Mike Richards outworked a Florida defender behind the visiting net and fed to the top of the right circle for a successful one-timer by Carcillo.
Williams gave the Kings a 2-0 lead with a successful shot from the slot off an Anze Kopitar dish with 5:05 remaining. It was the 500th career point for the 13-year veteran, who also played for the Flyers and Hurricanes.
LA went up by three with 7:32 to play, as Nolan broke for the net up the middle and deftly tipped home a Jarret Stoll centering pass.
"They have a very simple system with some big bodies and it was not just a matter of winning the puck battles, but also the secondary ones. As the game wore on, we got worn down," said Panthers head coach Kevin Dineen. "We thought we could play a fancy game against the Kings."
