Hurricanes, Islanders clash trying to start win streaks

Oct 19, 2013 - 2:07 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - A pair of clubs looking to win two straight games for the first time this season square off on Saturday night, when the Carolina Hurricanes visit the New York Islanders.

Both the Hurricanes and Islanders snapped three-game slides on Thursday with 3-2 victories. Carolina bested the hosting Toronto Maple Leafs, while New York won a home decision over the Edmonton Oilers.

The Hurricanes halted an 0-1-2 slump on a fluke goal by Ron Hainsey, one that capped a three-goal third period as Carolina overcame a 2-0 deficit. Ryan Murphy and Eric Staal scored earlier in the frame for the 'Canes.

Hainsey picked up his second goal of the season when he cleared the puck down the ice off the left boards from his own circle. The disc then bounced off the backboards towards the crease, where Toronto netminder Jonathan Bernier took a lazy swipe at it, but missed and the puck bounced off his skate and into the net.

"It's just one of those lucky things that happens over time," said Hainsey, whose goal gave the 'Canes a victory in the opener of a four-game road trip.

The Isles, meanwhile, had been 0-2-1 in their previous three before besting the Oilers. Both John Tavares and Kyle Okposo finished with a goal and an assist, Josh Bailey scored and Evgeni Nabokov made 27 saves.

Nabokov settled down after allowing a pair of goals just eight seconds apart in the first period.

"It was good to see us come away with a pretty complete game in terms of the way we have to play and how hard we have to play. Obviously, we had a couple letdowns with their goals, but we responded well," said Tavares, who has four goals and five assists over a six-game point streak.

New York is 2-0-2 at home this season and puts that streak on the line tonight against a Carolina club that won all three of its meetings with the Islanders last season, including two games on Long Island.

The Hurricanes are 9-1-2 in the past 12 as the road team in this series.

Both No. 1 goaltenders have had success in this matchup. Ward is 16-3-3 with a 2.39 goals against average lifetime versus the Isles, while Nabokov is 8-1-2 with a 2.11 GAA against the Hurricanes.
