Bruins shut down Bolts once more; Bishop suffers first loss
Oct 20, 2013 - 5:56 AM Tampa, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Tuukka Rask stopped 23 shots and five different players tallied, as the Boston Bruins chased previously undefeated goaltender Ben Bishop and claimed a 5-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday.David Krejci, Adam McQuaid, Patrice Bergeron, Chris Kelly and Shawn Thornton lit the lamp for the Bruins, who have won the first two of a three-game road trip which concludes in Buffalo on Wednesday.
"I think everyone showed up from the drop of the puck tonight and it showed on the scoreboard," said Bergeron. "We kept pushing the whole game and wound up with a good result."
Rask came away with his first whitewash of the season and 17th career shutout to help Boston up its record to 5-2-0 and improve to 2-0 this year against the Lightning, who dropped a 3-1 opening-night decision to the defending Eastern Conference champions on Oct. 3.
Bishop had won all five of his starts this season, allowing just eight goals in all, but was pulled late in the second after giving up four scores on 17 shots in defeat. Anders Lindback finished the contest with four saves.
"That wasn't the way we wanted to play, especially at home in front of our fans," said Bishop. "We can play a lot better, and we will."
Boston struck just 1:32 into the contest, as Krejci beat his man to the top of the Tampa crease to whack home a Milan Lucic centering feed.
Rask came across the crease to rob Steven Stamkos on a tip in just after the two-minute mark of the second, and the Bruins eventually took a two-goal lead.
McQuaid gained a hold of a loose puck at the point, and his fluttering shot appeared to be tipped home at 4:37 by Iginla, who screened Bishop completely. However, the lumbering defenseman was credited with his first of the season.
It was a three-goal margin for the visitors with 5:08 on the second-period clock on Bergeron's tally, then Brad Marchand fed Kelly to make it 4-0 only 55 seconds later.
Thornton's first of the season gave the Bruins a 5-0 edge just 34 seconds into the final period, and minutes later Rask denied Stamkos again on a point-blank chance from the right side.
