Sharks down Red Wings in SO

Oct 22, 2013 - 4:47 AM Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Logan Couture's goal in the second round of the shootout was the only time the puck found the back of the net as the San Jose Sharks took a 1-0 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Monday.

In the second round, Couture skated in on Jimmy Howard and deked back to the forehand before snapping the puck into the left corner.

Todd Bertuzzi had the last chance for Detroit and beat Antti Niemi to the left side. Bertuzzi lifted the rolling puck from a sharp angle and appeared to have an open net, but Niemi was able to lift his right pad and stop the puck for the win.

Niemi posted his first shutout of the season and 24th of his career to help the Sharks win for a ninth time in 10 games this season.

"It's nice to win in the shootout because we lost one in Dallas," said Couture. "Niemi really had a great night out there, and that last save he made was awesome."

Howard was credited with his 17th career shutout and first of the season for the Red Wings, who have dropped their past two games.

"That was two really good teams playing some great defense out there," said Detroit head coach Mike Babcock. "Scoring chances were very few on both sides of the ice."

San Jose skated twice on the power play in the first period, but only managed seven shots on Howard. Detroit skated on the man advantage once in the frame and had four shots.

A busy second period saw Howard stop 12 shots and kill off one penalty, while Niemi turned away seven shots.

San Jose killed off a late power play in the third period as Niemi made 12 stops in the frame and one in the extra session, while Howard made eight saves in the final 25 minutes.
