Stars breeze by Flames behind Chiasson, Benn
Oct 25, 2013 - 5:55 AM Dallas, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Alex Chiasson scored a pair of goals to lead the Dallas Stars to a 5-1 rout of the Calgary Flames from American Airlines Center.Chiasson lit the lamp in the first period, then broke a 1-1 tie midway through the second for Dallas, which snapped a two-game losing skid. The Stars had given up at least three goals in five straight games.
Jamie Benn also scored twice for the Stars, with Brenden Dillon adding a goal in the triumph. Kari Lehtonen returned between the pipes after missing the previous five contests with a lower body injury and turned away 28-of-29 shots he faced.
"He played great. He gave us a couple key saves at real important times," Dallas head coach Lindy Ruff said about Lehtonen.
Karri Ramo yielded all five goals on 34 shots for Calgary, which has lost two straight and four of its last five. Lee Stempniak scored the lone goal for the Flames.
Chiasson opened the scoring early in the first period when he planted himself in front of the net and received a terrific entry pass from Ray Whitney. Chiasson collected the pass, deked Ramo and lost the puck briefly before batting it home while falling to the ice.
Dallas was caught out of position early in the second period, allowing Stempniak to skate in alone and rip a shot over Lehtonen's shoulder to tie the score at 1-1.
Chiasson's controversial second goal at the 11:11 mark put the Stars in front for good. A turnover deep in Calgary's zone left the puck in Whitney's possession. He found a cutting Chiasson who appeared to score the go-ahead goal. Play continued, however, and Lehtonen eventually covered the puck at the other end.
Officials reviewed the play and determined that Chiasson's shot did beat Ramo before carroming back onto the ice.
Eighteen seconds later, Dallas made it 3-1 on Benn's second marker of the season. Tyler Seguin crashed the net on a Stars' counter-attack and attracted multiple defenders, leaving Benn wide open. Rich Peverly found him and Benn one-timed it in.
The onslaught continued with another Dallas goal less than a minute after that. A face-off in the Flames' zone was won back to Dillon, who fluttered a shot on goal. Ramo was screened and failed to find the puck, which trickled past him.
"Well those three quick goals, that definitely took energy out of us and we just couldn't recover," said Calgary head coach Bob Hartley.
As a Calgary power-play winded down early in the third, Lehtonen tried to find Chiasson out of the penalty box. The pass was intercepted but ultimately found Benn, who shot wide of goal. Chiasson tracked down the disc behind the Flames' goal and went back to Benn, whose quick wrap-around beat Ramo.
