Holtby helps Caps down Oilers
Oct 25, 2013 - 6:01 AM Edmonton, AB (SportsNetwork.com) - Braden Holtby stopped 30 shots to help the Washington Capitals take a 4-1 win over the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday.Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom each posted a goal and an assist, while Jason Chimera and Joel Ward also scored for the Capitals, who have won the first two stops on a five-game road trip.
"We were a little shaky in the first since this was our first time in this building," said Washington head coach Adam Oates. "But the guys settled down and we were able to dictate the play there for a while."
Justin Schultz scored the lone goal of the game for the Oilers, who had a two- game winning streak stopped. Devan Dubnyk gave up all four goals on 26 shots in the loss.
Washington took a 1-0 lead with just 1:47 left in the first period as a right circle faceoff win by Backstrom was pushed forward to Marcus Johansson, who quickly dumped it back to Ovechkin for a quick shot into the left corner of the net.
At 15:35 of the second period, the Capitals made it a 2-0 game as a shot from the right point by John Carlson was deflected in front by Ward for his third of the season.
The Caps took a 3-0 lead 1:24 into the third as a pass from the right circle by Ovechkin went to the right circle for Johansson, who then sent it to the front where Backstrom swept it in with a defender on his back.
Chimera scored his second of the season with 6:37 to play with a wrister on the fly from the left circle, while Schultz spoiled Holtby's shutout bid with 2:04 to play as he shifted to the backhand down low while skating and put it into the net for his first of the year.
"I give a lot of credit to their goaltender," Oilers head coach Dallas Eakins said of Holtby "He made some great saves. We had some good looks, we just couldn't get it past him."
