Coyotes hope to rebound in home test vs. Oilers

Oct 26, 2013 - 2:53 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - One point streak may be over for the Phoenix Coyotes but they'll try to keep another going on Saturday afternoon when they play host to the Edmonton Oilers.

The Coyotes had gone 5-0-2 in their previous seven games before dropping a 7-4 road decision to the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday. It was Phoenix's first regulation loss since Oct. 8 at the New York Islanders.

The Kings jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first period before the Coyotes climbed back into the game. They got second-period tallies from Jeff Halpern and Martin Hanzal before Hanzal and Shane Doan scored just under one minute apart early in the third.

Looking to go ahead on the power play just a few minutes later, Los Angeles' Mike Richards instead put home the go-ahead goal while shorthanded and the Kings tacked on from there for the win.

The Kings' four-goal first began with a power-play tally 42 seconds into the game.

"We went out and we took a penalty the first shift," Phoenix head coach Dave Tippett said. "In the offensive zone they scored, they got momentum and they ran with it. Put us behind the eight ball. We crawled back into it and then we gave it away again."

Mike Smith allowed four goals on 15 shots in the first period before being replaced by Thomas Greiss, who turned away 20 of the 22 shots he faced over the final 40 minutes.

Phoenix, which is 3-0-1 as the host, next plays three straight at home and has an eight-game point streak going in this series. The Coyotes are 6-0-2 over that span and have taken 12 of the last 16 meetings overall.

The Coyotes are 6-1-1 in their past eight at home versus the Oilers and Smith is 5-1-1 with a 2.18 goals against average in this matchup.

The Oilers returned home following a 2-3-1 road trip looking for a third straight win, but instead fell by a 4-1 score to Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals.

Justin Schultz prevented the shutout when he scored for Edmonton with just 2:04 to play, while Devan Dubnyk gave up four goals on 26 shots.

Washington netminder Braden Holtby, meanwhile, made 30 saves and kept Edmonton scoreless on three power-play chances. The Oilers are 0-for-21 on the man advantage over the last six games.

"I give a lot of credit to their goaltender," Oilers head coach Dallas Eakins said of Holtby "He made some great saves. We had some good looks, we just couldn't get it past him."

Dubnyk is 2-5-2 with a 2.96 GAA in his career versus Phoenix.
