Cammalleri scores twice, Flames beat Caps
Oct 27, 2013 - 5:40 AM Calgary, AB (SportsNetwork.com) - Mike Cammalleri scored two goals and had an assist to lead the Calgary Flames to a 5-2 win over the Washington Capitals on Saturday.Kris Russell, Jiri Hudler and Curtis Glencross also scored for the Flames, who had dropped four of their last five coming in. Karri Ramo made 27 saves in the victory.
Jason Chimera and Aaron Volpatti scored one goal apiece for the Capitals, who had a three-game winning streak snapped. Braden Holtby allowed three goals on 14 shots and Michael Neuvirth gave up two goals on 19 shots in the setback.
"We have to come out, especially on the road, better. There is no excuse, we just have to come out better," Volpatti said.
Calgary led 3-1 after the opening period.
Russell opened the scoring with his first goal of the season 1:04 into the game. Russell corralled a loose puck near the left circle and blasted a wrister past Holtby.
"Kris Russell played very, very well. I thought that he jumped in the play and made some great decisions with the puck defensively," said Flames head coach Bob Hartley. "For a small sized defenseman it is pretty unbelievable how he's always in the play. He always finds a way to get it done. A very intelligent player."
Hudler made it 2-0 with his marker just over six minutes later. Sean Monahan's shot in traffic was stopped, but Hudler was there to clean up the miss.
Chimera got the Caps on the board with his goal 12:02 in, but Cammalleri potted his third goal of the season 48 seconds later to make it a two-goal game again.
Volpatti's stuffed home a rebound 7:45 into the middle session to pull the Caps within 3-2, but the Flames added a pair of goals in the third period to seal the win.
Cammalleri fired a shot from the corner and the disc trickled through Neuvirth's pads just over half way through the final frame.
Glencross' one-timer from the point just over four minutes later accounted for the final difference.
