Stastny, Avs down Jets

Oct 28, 2013 - 3:15 AM Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Paul Stastny scored the game-winner with 5:28 left to lift the Colorado Avalanche to a 3-2 win over the Winnipeg Jets on Sunday.

Matt Duchene and Jan Hejda also scored for the Avalanche (10-1), who are off to their best start since moving to Colorado in 1995.

"We came in here tonight, and although we were behind, we knew we wouldn't lose this game. We had the belief and we got the job done," said Duchene.

Semyon Varlamov made 23 saves in the win.

Blake Wheeler and Bryan Little scored for the Jets, losers in four of their last five games. Al Montoya made 33 saves but allowed all three goals in the setback.

"He was great. He kept the score tight. We really didn't help him too much in the third period," Little said of Montoya.

Colorado went into the final frame trailing 2-1. Hejda tied the game 7:13 into the period with a slap shot from the left circle.

After the Avs killed off their 17th straight power play, Stastny one-timed a pass from Gabriel Landeskog for the game-winner.

Duchene opened up the scoring 8:04 into the game. Steve Downie skated in down the right side and fired a shot off Montoya's left leg. Duchene was there to clean up the miss to give the Avs a 1-0 lead.

Little tied the game just under three minutes later. Adam Pardy's shot missed wide and bounced off the boards behind the net right to Little, who pounded the puck into the back of the net.

Wheeler's slap shot 10:02 into the middle session gave Winnipeg a 2-1 lead.
