Daniel Sedin lifts Canucks over Capitals
Oct 29, 2013 - 6:22 AM Vancouver, BC (SportsNetwork.com) - Daniel Sedin scored the winner in the third period as the Vancouver Canucks took a 3-2 victory over the Washington Capitals on Monday.Zack Kassian and Ryan Kesler each had a goal for the Canucks, who have won four straight. Roberto Luongo stopped 17 shots in the win.
Jason Chimera had a goal and an assist while Mikhail Grabovski scored the other goal for the Capitals, who are now 2-2-0 on a five-game road trip. Michal Neuvirth made 38 saves in defeat.
"They put a lot of pucks on net and it wasn't an easy game," Neuvirth said. "They are a pretty good team around the net and we took too many penalties and I think we got tired a little."
It was a tie game heading into the third period, but Washington took a 2-1 lead at 1:52 as Chimera chipped the puck over to Grabovski in the slot and he skated down low before snapping a shot past Luongo.
Just 61 seconds later, though, the Canucks tied the game as a slap shot from Ryan Stanton at the top of the left circle was stopped by Neuvirth, but the rebound wound up bouncing to the right side and Kesler slapped it in.
The Canucks then took a 3-2 advantage at 5:01 when Daniel Sedin took a pass from his brother and skated from the right wing to the high slot before blasting a shot through and screen and into the net.
"Resiliency," Kesler said. "We find a way to battle back and get the go-ahead (goal). That's the way our team's been all year."
Vancouver took a 1-0 lead at 11:31 of the first period as Kassian's snap shot on the fly from the right circle went through the pads of Neuvirth.
Washington, though, scored three minutes later as Mike Green's slap shot from the right point was deflected into the net by Chimera at the left side for his fourth of the year.
Neuvirth was the busier of the two goalies in the second period, but he turned aside all 16 shots he faced in the frame, while Luongo made three saves, to keep the game deadlocked heading to the third.
