Jagr, Brodeur lead Devils past Lightning
Oct 30, 2013 - 4:25 AM Newark, NJ (SportsNetwork.com) - Jaromir Jagr and Adam Henrique scored one goal apiece in the New Jersey Devils' 2-1 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday.Patrik Elias added an assist and Martin Brodeur stopped 16 shots for the Devils, winners of two straight.
"I felt like we played a pretty good game defensively. They don't like to play that style. You just have to patient with them," Jagr said.
Steven Stamkos scored his ninth goal of the season for Tampa Bay, which had a three-game winning streak snapped. Ben Bishop allowed both goals on 22 shots in the setback.
"We have a game plan in place and it gets a little frustrating when we don't execute our plan," Lightning head coach Jon Cooper said. "If you're going to get less than 20 shots in a hockey game, that's not very hard to play against."
Henrique's shorthanded marker 1:36 into the middle session gave the Devils a 1-0 lead. Henrique corralled a loose puck near center-ice and passed it to Elias on a 2-on-1 break. Elias sent the puck back to Henrique, who stuffed it home.
Jagr then stole the puck from Tampa forward Martin St. Louis took off uncontested before beating Bishop for his third goal of the season for a two- goal New Jersey edge.
Stamkos made things interesting with just over 4 1/2 minutes left in the second period. Teddy Purcell fired a shot from above the left circle and Stamkos redirected it as he was falling to the ice to cut the deficit in half.
The Devils killed off three Lighting power plays in the final session to hold on for the win.
