Blues clip Jets to claim another late victory
Oct 30, 2013 - 4:34 AM St. Louis, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Alex Steen netted the winning goal with one minute left in regulation, sending St. Louis past Winnipeg by a 3-2 count at Scottrade Center.Brenden Morrow and Alex Pietrangelo also tallied for the Blues, winners of two straight after dropping three of four. Jaroslav Halak came up with 21 saves for the hosts.
Blake Wheeler and Bryan Little scored for the Jets, who slipped to their fifth loss in six games. Andrew Ladd assisted on both scores, but Ondrej Pavelec suffered the defeat in spite of 30 stops.
"I thought we gave ourselves an opportunity to win the game, but the frustrating thing is this has happened in back-to-back games. We gave them five power plays at the end of the game, it is like we're finding ways to lose," said Jets head coach Claude Noel.
Steen's league-leading 11th goal of the season was a backhander from between the circles which dropped between Pavelec's pads and over the goal line. It came just over a minute into a power play created when Jets defenseman Tobias Enstrom was sent off for interference.
"Once I got the puck I figured I had a little bit of time. It was nice to see it go in," Steen said.
Pavelec wasn't sent to the bench for an extra skater for another 30 seconds, and his club was unable to send the game beyond regulation.
Morrow put the Blues on the board with 6:36 played in the opening period by converting a Ryan Reaves rebound, then Wheeler equalized for the hosts at 11:20 on the power play when he knocked down a Ladd rebound from the left side of the crease.
St. Louis snapped the deadlock with 4:16 gone in the third period, as T.J. Oshie emerged from a scrum after a left-circle faceoff, then dished ahead to Pietrangelo for a successful wrister from the right wing.
Winnipeg was down a man, but tied the game just after the midway point on Little's shot from the right side. Ladd held the puck on the left wing for the 2-on-1 break, then stumbled close to Halak, but the disc squirted free long enough for Little to lift it over the Blues' netminder.
Game Notes
St. Louis has won four of its six lifetime home contests against the Atlanta/Winnipeg franchise, but since the clubs are new division rivals, will play twice more in the Gateway City before the end of the season ... Prior to the contest, the Jets announced that defenseman Paul Postma was placed on injured reserve with a blood clot in his leg, with Ben Chiarot recalled from St. John's of the AHL to take the roster spot.
