Russell's goal lifts Flames over Blackhawks
Nov 4, 2013 - 5:35 AM Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Kris Russell scored the game-winner 1:32 into overtime to lead the Calgary Flames to a 3-2 win over the Chicago Blackhawks.Mike Cammalleri and Curtis Glencross also scored for the Flames, who had dropped four of their last five games entering the contest. Reto Berra made 42 saves in his NHL debut.
"I was really nervous, but right before the game when I was sitting in here," Berra said. "I put that excitement and nerves into positive energy."
Patrick Kane had one goal and one assist and Marian Hossa also lit the lamp for the Blackhawks, who had won three straight. Corey Crawford turned away 27 shots in the setback.
"We did put pucks at him, but we didn't get enough rebounds and we didn't get enough traffic," Blackhawks head coach Joel Quenneville said. "Certainly, he was pretty good at controlling those rebounds tonight as well."
Russell one-timed a pass for Glencross just inside the blue line off the cross-bar and into the net for the win.
Earlier, Kane skated down the left side and blasted a wrister from the circle to make it 1-0 6:25 into the second period.
Cammalleri tied it up 50 seconds later after tipping in Dennis Wideman's shot. With traffic in front of the net, Wideman blasted a shot from the blue line and Cammalleri was there to tip the disc over Crawford's left shoulder.
Glencross scored 2:16 into the final session on a breakaway wrister from the left circle to put the Flames ahead 2-1.
Hossa cashed in on a 5-on-3 advantage with his sixth goal of the with 4:19 remaining to tie the game. Kane passed to Hossa in the left slot and the forward blasted a slap shot past Berra to knot things up.
Game Notes
Wideman finished with two assists ... Calgary did not have a power play opportunity ... Kane has eight points over his last seven games ... The Flames will visit the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday ... The Blackhawks will host Winnipeg on Wednesday.
