Oilers best slumping Panthers to end skid
Nov 6, 2013 - 7:14 AM Sunrise, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Mark Arcobello scored his first two NHL goals, the second coming on a power play 1:55 into overtime, to lift the Edmonton Oilers to a 4-3 win over the equally struggling Florida Panthers at BB&T Center.Florida forward Scottie Upshall forced overtime with a pair of third-period goals, but tripped Ryan Nugent-Hopkins 32 seconds into the extra session.
Arcobello planted himself in the left circle and hammered home a feed from Ales Hemsky behind Jacob Markstrom.
"To help the team win is the biggest thing. It's nice to be able to contribute," Arcobello said.
Taylor Fedun scored in his NHL debut for the Oilers, who prevailed in a matchup of two teams that entered Tuesday's play on five-game losing streaks.
Devan Dubnyk, back after missing three games with an ankle injury, made 20 saves in Edmonton's fifth consecutive road win against the Panthers.
Markstrom was beaten four times on 27 shots.
We got into a little giving chances to get chances and that's not the way we play and that's not the way we play when we're playing at our best," Panthers head coach Kevin Dineen said.
Arcobello broke a 1-1 tie at the 2:06 mark of the middle stanza. Boyd Gordon played the puck off the left-wing boards, sending it into the Florida end. Arcobello retrieved the puck and lit the lamp from a sharp angle. Markstrom had gone down to one knee in an attempt to hug the left post, but the 25-year- old forward, playing in his 17th NHL game, found room over the goalie's shoulder.
The Oilers went right back on the attack and Fedun extended the lead 33 seconds later. Fedun, 25, joined the rush to bury a pass from Nugent-Hopkins at 2:39.
"It was awesome to get out there in the first place and then to have the opportunity to score was amazing," Fedun remarked.
Florida managed to get to overtime for the fifth time in seven games thanks to Upshall, who potted his first two goals of the season.
Off a turnover by the Oilers in the defensive zone, Upshall ripped a shot from between the circles past Dubnyk's left shoulder midway through the third. Moments after Markstrom went to the bench for an extra skater, Upshall let go a quick release and beat Dubnyk from the top of the left circle with 57.6 seconds remaining.
The Panthers opened the scoring on a goal by Marcel Goc 10:35 into the game, but Philip Larsen countered for Edmonton while the teams skated 4-on-4 with 3:01 left in the first period.
