Ducks dump Coyotes to remain perfect at home
Nov 7, 2013 - 6:55 AM Anaheim, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Hampus Lindholm, Ryan Getzlaf and Cam Fowler each had a goal and an assist as the Anaheim Ducks stayed perfect at home with a 5-2 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes on Wednesday.Corey Perry and Andrew Cogliano also lit the lamp for Anaheim, which improved to 6-0-0 at home this season. Jonas Hiller made 24 saves.
The Ducks have outscored their opponents 26-10 at home this season and are on their longest winning streak as the hosting club since a club-record 13-game streak from Jan. 26-March 20 of last season.
"We were definitely treating this game with tons of importance," Fowler said. "We knew the type of roll Phoenix was on coming in here, and it seems like nobody seems to be losing in our division right now. We understood how important these two points were, and luckily we were able to come out and put a good effort out there."
Michael Stone and Shane Doan scored for the Coyotes, who had a five-game winning streak snapped. Mike Smith stopped 24-of-28 shots in defeat.
Trailing 2-1 late in the middle stanza, the Ducks scored four unanswered goals over the remainder of the game to take the win.
Getzlaf tied the game at the 15:36 mark. While on a 5-on-3 power play, he fired a shot on net from the left point that deflected off Martin Hanzal's stick and past Smith.
Anaheim took the lead with just 1.1 seconds remaining as Perry re-directed Lindholm's rocket shot from the point past Smith.
Fowler's power-play goal at the 10:08 mark of the third stanza made it 4-2. After Nick Bonino won a faceoff, Fowler beat Smith with a slap shot from the point.
Cogliano appeared to hurt his right leg before scoring an empty-net goal with 1:02 to play.
Doan scored on a breakaway at the 4:25 mark of the first period to make it 1-0 Phoenix.
But it was mistake by Doan that led to Anaheim's first goal of the game. Doan fanned on a pass in the neutral zone that led to a 3-on-2 rush for the Ducks. Lindholm found the back of the net from the high slot for his first NHL goal with five minutes left before the first intermission.
"You can't win a game in this league if you are going to turn the puck over and be undisciplined," Phoenix coach Dave Tippett said. "We knew it was going to be a hard game. It was a great test for our team to see how we reacted and we didn't play well enough, we didn't play disciplined enough to win."
Stone's power-play goal put the Coyotes back in front at the 12:40 mark of the middle stanza. David Moss controlled the puck at the side of the net before finding Stone at the right circle.
