Hurricanes aim to stay on track vs. Islanders

Nov 7, 2013 - 4:00 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Justin Peters finally earned his first win of the season to help the Carolina Hurricanes end a five-game losing streak their last time out. He hopes to make it two in a row on Thursday, when the Hurricanes host the New York Islanders in a Metropolitan Division battle at PNC Arena.

Peters, who has been the only goaltender Carolina has used since Cam Ward was injured early in a game on Oct. 24 in Minnesota, was 0-5-0 on the season before recording a victory Tuesday in Philadelphia. Making his fifth straight start between the pipes, Peters stopped 28-of-29 shots in a 2-1 overtime decision over the Flyers.

Although he entered this season as third on Carolina's depth chart behind Ward and Anton Khudobin, Peters is currently the No. 1 goaltender for the 'Canes. He nearly fell to 0-6 in that role on Tuesday, but his teammates pulled out the win with some late heroics.

Peters allowed Philadelphia's Scott Hartnell to score the game's first goal with 3:58 left in the third, but Jordan Staal evened things at 1-1 by scoring with just 52.3 seconds remaining in regulation. Manny Malhotra then scored the game winner at 2:40 of overtime to lift Carolina to its first win since Oct. 19 against the Islanders.

After Philadelphia defenseman Mark Streit turned the puck over, Malhotra got behind the defense and charged in on Mason before beating him with a backhander.

"I think we're happy with the win right now," said Malhotra. "We're sticking to our plan and letting things come together here. This was a big step and we'll keep going at it."

Jiri Tlusty scored a pair of goals for Carolina in the club's 4-3 road win over the Islanders on Oct. 19. Ward earned the win with 22 saves in that meeting, while New York netminder Evgeni Nabokov allowed all four goals on just 19 shots.

Carolina has taken four straight in the series with the Islanders overall and has a 4-1-1 record in the past six meetings in Raleigh.

The Islanders had won two straight before getting slammed in Tuesday's road game against the Washington Capitals. Alex Ovechkin delivered two goals and an assist to lead the way in Washington's 6-2 drubbing of New York.

John Tavares and Kyle Okposo both had a goal and an assist for the Islanders, while Nabokov allowed all six Washington goals on 39 shots.

Tavares enters Thursday with a goal in each of his last three games. He has victimized Carolina to the tune of 12 goals and 21 points in 16 career games against the club.

The Isles will continue their four-game road trip Saturday in Columbus before completing the trek the following night against Montreal.
