Steen lifts Blues past Flames

Nov 8, 2013 - 6:17 AM St. Louis, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Alexander Steen's league-leading 14th goal of the season came early in the second period and served as the game-winner on Thursday, as the St. Louis Blues held off the Calgary Flames, 3-2, at Scot trade Center.

Steen's marker staked St. Louis to a 3-0 lead 5:55 into the second, but Calgary countered with a pair of goals in the third to pull within one.

The Flames then had a brief two-man advantage late in the frame after Vladimir Sobotka was whistled for a face-off violation and Reto Berra left the Calgary net in favor of the extra attacker, but Brian Elliott stood tall between the pipes down the stretch to send St. Louis to its fifth victory in six tries.

Maxim Lapierre and Vladimir Tarasenko each scored once for the Blues, who received 18 saves from Elliott.

Mike Cammalleri and Tim Jackman netted the Calgary goals, while Berra allowed all three goals on 27 shots for the Flames, who have lost two straight and four of their last five games.

"We created some chances at the net, but we didn't do it all night longs," said Flames forward Chris Butler.

With the Flames trailing 3-0 to begin the third, Jackman started the Calgary comeback at 4:41 when he tipped in Shane O'Brien's point blast to make it 3-1.

Cammalleri's one-timer from a tough angle on the low right side made it a one- goal game with 5:11 remaining, but the Flames failed to find the equalizer from there.

Tarasenko's power-play marker 3:01 into the game gave St. Louis an early edge before Lapierre doubled the margin just past the midpoint of the frame when he tipped in Jordan Leopold's shot to make it 2-0.

"The first period was terrific," Blues head coach Ken Hitchcock said. "We did a lot of really good things. We played exactly the way we wanted to."

Steen scored from in front just under six minutes into the middle stanza to extend the lead to 3-0.
