Blues smother Penguins
Nov 10, 2013 - 6:27 AM St. Louis, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Kevin Shattenkirk netted the deciding goal in the middle stages of the third period, sending St. Louis past Pittsburgh, 2-1, at Scottrade Center.Ryan Reaves picked up the other goal and Jaroslav Halak came up with 19 saves for the Blues, who have won three in a row and six of seven.
"We needed to prove we can play with elite teams," Reaves said.
Jussi Jokinen registered the lone score for the Penguins, who received 30 stops from Marc-Andre Fleury in his club's second straight setback.
Shattenkirk put the Blues ahead to stay with 9:08 remaining in the third. His floater from the right point near the boards appeared to change direction off bodies in front and cross up Fleury just enough to dribble over the goal line inside the left post.
In their usual defensive mode, St. Louis only allowed five shots on net from the Metropolitan Division leaders, all of which Halak handled with ease to lock up the narrow victory.
"It's not the outcome we wanted...but it's a step in the right direction," Penguins defenseman Deryl Engelland said.
Reaves opened the scoring for the hosts when he beat Fleury just shy of the three-minute mark of the second period, tipping in a Max Lapierre offering from between the circles.
Jokinen responded on the power play with 8:06 gone, heading to the net and skillfully redirecting an Evgeni Malkin feed.
Game Notes
The Blues have won three of the last four meetings with the Penguins since Oct. 23, 2010, but had not played each other since Jan. 24, 2012, a 3-2 Pittsburgh win in a shootout ... Steen, tied for the NHL lead in goals with 14, extended his point streak to 10 games with an assist on Reaves' tally, while Penguins captain Sidney Crosby was held off the scoresheet for only the fourth time this year.
