Flyers down Penguins for 3rd straight win

Nov 14, 2013 - 5:54 AM Pittsburgh, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Brayden Schenn lit the lamp twice as the Philadelphia Flyers defeated the cross-state rival Pittsburgh Penguins, 2-1, on Wednesday.

Wayne Simmonds, Steve Downie, and Jakub Voracek assisted on Schenn's goals, while Ray Emery stopped 30-of-31 shots. The Flyers have won their past three games, including a 5-0 rout of Ottawa on Tuesday.

"We're gaining more confidence," Emery said. "It feels good."

Sidney Crosby scored Pittsburgh's lone goal that was assisted by Evgeni Malkin and Jussi Jokinen. Marc-Andre Fleury made 19 saves in Pittsburgh's third straight loss.

Pittsburgh appeared to have scored 19 seconds into the game, but the goal was disallowed upon further review. Crosby took a pass from Chris Kunitz and tore through the neutral zone to fire a shot on Emery. Kunitz followed up with a backhander, but was ruled to have kicked the puck past Emery.

Schenn opened up the scoring with nearly four minutes remaining in the first. Simmonds crashed in on the forecheck and forced a turnover from Robert Bortuzzo. He then found Schenn, who wristed the puck over the shoulder of Fleury for the early lead.

Crosby evened it up on the power play 8:29 into the second. Malkin held the puck along the boards and dished a crisp pass across the ice to Crosby, who snuck in behind the defense for the tip-in.

Emery stopped Crosby on a breakaway late in the second, closing the five-hole to deny Pittsburgh's captain.

Schenn got his second of the night on the power play with 1:20 left in the period. Voracek fired a shot from the point with Downie and Schenn setting a screen in front of Fleury. The puck trickled off the post to Schenn, who deposited it into an open net.

The Penguins pulled Fleury late in the third, but the Flyers defense and Emery stood tall to ensure the win.

"We played a solid game. We just didn't (score) on our chances," Penguins forward James Neal said.
