Final
Kings blank Devils
Nov 16, 2013 - 4:36 AM Newark, NJ (SportsNetwork.com) - Dwight King broke a scoreless deadlock with just under seven minutes remaining and Ben Scrivens posted a 26-save shutout to lead the Los Angeles Kings to a 2-0 victory over the New Jersey Devils on Friday at Prudential Center.Jake Muzzin and Justin Williams each picked up an assist on King's sixth goal of the season, while Anze Kopitar added a late empty-netter to help the Kings claim their fourth win in their last five games.
Cory Schneider stopped 19-of-20 shots in defeat for the Devils, who had won three of their last four games coming into the tilt.
"It's not fun to lose," said Schneider, who fell to 1-5-3 in nine starts this season. "I want to be the guy that helps this team win and contributes in the win column."
The last time these teams met came in the 2012 Stanley Cup Finals, which the Kings won in six games.
Friday's rematch remained scoreless until late in the third when Williams won a battle along the left boards in the New Jersey zone and tipped the puck to the point for Muzzin.
With King camped out in front, Muzzin threw a low shot on goal that King tipped in past Schneider to make it 1-0 at 13:08.
"Dwight King plays a lot for our team," Kings head coach Darryl Sutter said. "He's a guy that can always go and stabilize the game for you."
LA's Mike Richards was whistled for a faceoff violation at 17:11 to give New Jersey a power play that turned into a two-man advantage after Schneider left the net for an extra attacker.
However, the Devils were unable to capitalize on the opportunity and Kopitar scored in the empty net from his own end in the closing seconds to account for the final margin.
Both goalies stood tall over the opening 40 minutes, with Scrivens stopping 18 shots and Schneider saving 12 shots to keep the game scoreless heading into the final frame.
Game Notes
Scrivens posted his second shutout of the season and fourth of his career ... New Jersey forward Patrik Elias was activated off injured reserve prior to the game and logged just under 16 minutes of ice time ... LA finished 1-for-3 on the power play, while New Jersey went 0-for-2 on the man advantage.
