Oilers rally in third, top Flames
Nov 17, 2013 - 7:51 AM Calgary, AB (SportsNetwork.com) - Boyd Gordon tallied a goal and an assist as the Edmonton Oilers defeated the Calgary Flames, 4-2, at Scotiabank Saddledome. The Oilers scored four straight goals in the third period for the victory. Jordan Eberle, Ales Hemsky, and David Perron all lit the lamp as the Oilers snapped a five-game losing streak.
"Finally in the third period, I thought we had some responses early that our group needed," said Edmonton head coach Dallas Eakins. "This is one that we will certainly try to take home and feel good about ourselves."
Devan Dubnyk turned aside 33-of-35 shots in the victory.
Sean Monahan and Dennis Wideman scored for the Flames, while Reto Berra allowed three goals on 23 shots in Calgary's sixth straight loss.
"We gave them two goals out of three. After 40 minutes, I felt that we gave them nothing. We were playing our style. The first goal and third goal, there is only one word for those two goals, awful," said Calgary head coach Bob Hartley.
Monahan opened the scoring under 12 1/2 minutes into the first, as he raced up the left wing and dished a pass to Jiri Hudler in the middle. Hudler immediately returned the puck to Monahan, who deposited the puck into the back of the net.
The Flames went up by two goals after Wideman wound up at the right circle and fired a shot past Dubnyk with just under minutes left in the second.
Edmonton took over in the third. Eberle wristed a shot past Berra close to four minutes into the final frame.
Hemsky tied the game at two less than five minutes later. After racing through the neutral zone, Nail Yakupov dropped a pass off to Sam Gagner at the point. Gagner shot the puck off a Calgary defender and Hemsky knocked the puck out of the air at the side of the net to tie the game at 8:18.
Perron skated to the right and shot from below the goal line. The puck bounced off Berra and into the back of the net to give the Oilers the lead at 10:23.
The Flames pulled the goalie, but Lee Stempniak batted the puck into his own net. Gordon was credited with the empty-net goal to account for the final score.
