Kings aim to extend point streak in matchup with Rangers

Nov 17, 2013 - 3:44 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Thanks to Ben Scrivens, the Los Angeles Kings have managed to extend their point streak despite losing the services of No. 1 netminder Jonathan Quick.

Scrivens will likely be called upon on Sunday night in an attempt to lead the Kings to a third straight victory when they visit the New York Rangers.

Quick suffered a Grade 2 groin strain late in Tuesday's shootout loss in Buffalo and could miss up to six weeks of action. In has stepped Scrivens, who stopped 23-of-25 shots faced in a triumph over the New York Islanders on Thursday before he notched a 26-save shutout the following night in a 2-0 decision over the New Jersey Devils.

Scrivens picked up his second shutout of the season and fourth of his career. Acquired as part of the trade that sent former Kings backup goaltender Jonathan Bernier to Toronto, the 27-year-old is 3-1-1 with a 1.51 goals against average in seven games this season, including four starts.

Dwight King had the deciding goal with just under seven minutes remaining in Friday's win, tipping a low shot by Jake Muzzin into the net.

"Dwight King plays a lot for our team," Kings head coach Darryl Sutter said. "He's a guy that can always go and stabilize the game for you."

Justin Williams also picked up an assist on the goal and Anze Kopitar added an empty-net tally as Los Angeles moved to 4-0-1 in its last five games. It wraps a four-game homestand tonight.

The Rangers finish up their set of back-to-back games tonight after snapping an eight-game slide in Montreal with a 1-0 triumph over the Canadiens on Saturday. Backup Cam Talbot made 22 saves for his first career shutout, with the rookie moving to 4-1-0 with a 1.58 GAA over his first five NHL starts.

Ryan Callahan's power-play goal in the second period gave New York its seventh victory in nine games. He deflected Brad Richards' shot on net for his sixth goal of the season.

"That's what we wanted to do, especially with back-to-back games," said Richards. "We tried to keep the pucks down, and below the goal line, trying not to turn them over while using our speed. We did a pretty good job overall."

New York now has a point in 99 straight regular-season games when leading after the second period, going 93-0-6 in that span.

Richards scored twice in the Rangers' 3-1 win over the Kings in Los Angeles on Oct. 7. It was New York's fourth victory in the past six meetings overall.

The Rangers have not hosted the Kings since Feb. 17, 2011 and have won two straight as the home team in this series. Los Angeles has just three wins and a tie in its last 15 trips to Madison Square Garden.

Henrik Lundqvist made 28 saves in the first meeting this season and is expected to start tonight. He is 3-3-1 with a 2.67 GAA lifetime against the Kings.

Scrivens has never faced the Rangers, with Quick having started the Oct. 7 loss.
