Stastny and Avs beat up Hawks
Nov 20, 2013 - 4:58 AM Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Paul Stastny scored once and added an assist, while Semyon Varlamov posted 36 saves, as the Colorado Avalanche buried the Chicago Blackhawks, 5-1, on Tuesday at Pepsi Center.John Mitchell, PA Parenteau, Cody McLeod and Gabriel Landeskog each lit the lamp once to help the Avalanche snap a season-high three-game skid.
"We did not like that feeling," Parenteau said of losing three in a row. "We don't want to be losing again. We were motivated and we responded."
Corey Crawford gave up three goals on seven shots in the first period before being removed in favor of rookie Antti Raanta, who saved 14 shots in relief in his NHL debut.
Brandon Saad scored the lone goal of the game for the Blackhawks, who have lost two of their last three games.
Colorado chased Crawford from the contest early, with Stastny, Landeskog and Mitchell each scoring within the first 14 minutes of the game to give the Avalanche a comfortable 3-0 edge.
Stastny scored just over 6 1/2 minutes in when a strange carom off the end boards in the Chicago zone deflected into the slot, where Stastny rifled a wrister into the back of the net for 1-0 lead.
Landeskog and Mitchell scored 56 seconds apart later in the frame to make it 3-0, as Landeskog scored on a tip-in at 12:21 before Mitchell one-timed the disc home from in front at 13:17.
Raanta took over for Crawford following Mitchell's goal and held Colorado off the board until late in the second when Parenteau charged down the left side and rifled a wrister from the left circle to make it 4-0 at 18:38.
McLeod added his first of the season 1:44 into the third for a 5-0 lead before Saad scored at 12:10 to account for the final margin.
"I thought we gave a good push back in the second but we just couldn't finish up," Chicago defenseman Brent Seabrook said. "We have to get off to better starts. We have to nip this in the butt."
