Sedin brothers lead Canucks past Blue Jackets
Nov 23, 2013 - 6:56 AM Vancouver, BC (SportsNetwork.com) - Henrik Sedin scored a pair of goals and Daniel Sedin added a goal and two assists as the Vancouver Canucks cruised to a 6-2 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Friday.Zack Kassian, Alexander Edler and Jeremy Welsh added goals for the Canucks, who snapped a five-game skid. Roberto Luongo made 14 saves in the win.
"We needed to get the puck to the net and keep shooting and we did that. We played well, we hadn't scored a lot, so it feels good," said Kassian.
Matt Calvert and Artem Anisimov both scored for the Blue Jackets, losers in five of their last seven games. Sergei Bobrovsky allowed all six goals on 35 shots in the setback.
"It happened fast. We had a couple opportunities to take the lead, but they do a great job pressuring you. They were able to finish with a few quick goals. Obviously against a good team it is tough to recover from," said Blue Jackets coach Todd Richards.
Calvert opened up the scoring 2:47 into the game with his first goal of the season. Calvert took a pass from Michael Chaput at the blue line, bounced off a Vancouver defender and raced for the net. He faked a pass, pulled the puck back and danced around Luongo before depositing the disc in the back of the net.
Vancouver, though, scored five straight goals to run away with the win.
Daniel Sedin got the Canucks on the board with his goal with 16 seconds left in the first quarter. Sedin recovered the puck behind the Blue Jackets' net and skated out to the right circle before firing a wrister past Bobrovsky.
Kassian, Henrik Sedin and Edler each scored within nearly a two-minute span in the middle session.
First, Kassian ripped a wrister that Bobrovsky initially knocked down, but the puck trickled across the goal line for a 2-1 lead with just over 12 minutes played in the second. Henrik Sedin then cleaned up a rebound from a Daniel Sedin shot to make it 3-1 at the 13:59 mark.
Edler capped the big period with his slapshot from the blue line 16 seconds later for a three-goal cushion.
Henrik Sedin lit the lamp once again 9:05 into the third period. Daniel Sedin fired a shot from just inside the blue line and Henrik Sedin was there to redirect the puck off Bobrovsky's glove and into the back of the net for a 5-1 advantage.
Anisimov scored with 3:02 remaining and Welsh netted his first career goal with 29 seconds left for the final margin.
"The goal feels good, been a while coming," Welsh said.
Game Notes
The Canucks killed off five Columbus power plays, but went 0-for-4 on their own power play chances ... Ryan Stanton had three assists ... Welsh appeared in 21 career games before recording his first goal. He now has two career points.
