Rangers try to keep road winning streak going in Nashville

Nov 23, 2013 - 4:20 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The New York Rangers take aim at a sixth consecutive road victory on Saturday night when they resume their current swing with a matchup against the Nashville Predators.

The Rangers opened up a five-game road trip with Thursday's 3-2 victory over the Dallas Stars, getting goals from Chris Kreider and John Moore 37 seconds apart early in the third period.

Rick Nash added his first goal of the season in his second game back after missing 17 in a row due to a concussion. However, he did fail to convert a penalty shot chance just 12 seconds after Dallas had made it a one-goal game.

Henrik Lundqvist set a career single-period best with 23 saves in the first frame en route to stopping 41 pucks. His previous best was 20 stops in a single frame, done twice before.

"It felt good to get a period like that ... to really work hard," Lundqvist said of the opening frame. "It was just fun to be in there. There was so much action."

New York had lost three of four prior to Thursday's win and scored more than two goals for the first time in five games. It also improved to 7-6-0 on the road.

Rookie backup Cam Talbot is expected to get the call tonight for the Rangers. He is 4-1-0 with a 1.58 goals against average in five starts this season -- all on the road -- and is coming off his first career shutout after making 22 saves in Montreal last Saturday.

Nashville brings a season-high, three-game winning streak into tonight's clash and picked up a 4-2 road win over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday. Craig Smith had a pair of goals and Matt Cullen scored once while adding three assists.

Rookie Seth Jones also scored for the Predators and Marek Mazanec had 24 saves.

"I thought we got contributions from all lines tonight," said Predators coach Barry Trotz. "Everybody down the road. Even our fourth line -- they gave us some really good minutes when we needed it."

With No. 1 netminder Pekka Rinne out following hip surgery and backup Carter Hutton struggling, Mazanec has been in net for all three games of Nashville's winning streak. The 22-year-old has yielded just four goals in that span while also notching his first career shutout.

Mazanec is 3-2-0 with a 2.37 GAA in six games (5 starts) this season.

The Predators have lost each of their last three home meetings with the Rangers, having not bested the Blueshirts in Nashville since Feb. 28, 2004.

New York has won two straight and four of the previous six encounters overall.
