Krejci's OT strike sends Bruins past Hurricanes
Nov 23, 2013 - 10:18 PM Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - David Krejci notched the game-winner 1:28 into overtime, as the Boston Bruins defeated the Carolina Hurricanes, 3-2, on Saturday at TD Garden. On the deciding goal, Jarome Iginla split two defenders between the circles and got goaltender Cam Ward to commit before dishing to the slot for Krejci, who waited for Ward to dive back to the net before roofing the disc to send Boston to its seventh win in its last nine games.
"I didn't really know what to do at first, but then I found a way to get it past (Ward)," Krejci said of his game-winning goal.
Zdeno Chara and Reilly Smith each scored once for the Bruins, who received 22 saves from Chad Johnson.
Patrick Dwyer tied the game with a short-handed tally at 11:10 of the third, while Andrej Sekera added his fifth of the season for the Hurricanes, who have lost four in a row.
Ward posted 35 saves in defeat.
Boston carried a 2-1 lead into the third and seemed poised to extend the margin after the Hurricanes were whistled for delay-of-game at 10:24.
However, Milan Lucic misfired on a pass to the point and Dwyer poked the puck ahead to himself to spring free on a breakaway.
Skating in alone, Dwyer switched to his backhand and lifted the disc over the blocker-side of Johnson to tie the game with 8:50 remaining.
"Patty (Dwyer) made a great play to get the opportunity to skate in there," Carolina head coach Kirk Muller said of Dwyer's short-handed goal. "Obviously a huge goal at the right time."
Sekera's power-play marker 5:53 into the game gave Carolina an early edge, but Chara answered with a power-play tally of his own at 14:49 when pounded home a rebound from the low right side to make it 1-1.
Boston jumped in front with just under 6 1/2 minutes left in the second.Smith recovered a loose puck in front of the Carolina net and skated to the low right side before backhanding the disc past the short side of Ward for a 2-1 lead at 13:31.
