Ward backs Hurricanes over Senators
Nov 25, 2013 - 4:03 AM Raleigh, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Cam Ward posted 35 saves to help the Carolina Hurricanes take a 4-1 win over the Ottawa Senators on Sunday.Eric Staal posted a goal and two assists for the Hurricanes, who snapped a four-game slide. Tuomo Ruutu, Elias Lindholm, and Patrick Dwyer all scored in the win.
"If we keep working like that, guys are going to come alive and we're going to win some hockey games," Dwyer said of his team's effort.
Jason Spezza had the lone goal of the game for the Senators, who have dropped five of their last seven. Robin Lehner allowed three goals on 36 shots in the loss.
"Right now, we don't play hard enough to win," Senators head coach Paul MacLean said. "We don't play long enough to win consistently."
The only goal of the first period went to Ottawa at 1:07 as a right circle faceoff win saw Mika Zibanejad eventually center the puck from the left side of the net to Spezza, whose one-timer was stopped but he was able to poke home his own rebound for a 1-0 lead.
Carolina tied the game at 3:10 of the second period as a loose puck came out to the right circle where Dwyer slapped it home for his third of the year.
The Hurricanes took the lead three minutes later as Staal brought the puck in the right side and pulled up at the point. He then fed it low to Ruutu, who beat Lehner with a wrister to the left corner.
It was a 3-1 game at 9:03 of the second as Staal held the puck along the right boards and fed it down low for Lindholm, who made a move to the front and snapped it in for a power-play marker.
Ward stopped 14 shots in the second period, then turned away 10 in the third to keep the Senators at bay.
Ottawa pulled Lehner with under three minutes to play, but Staal put the game away with an empty-netter.
