Jets visit Devils hoping to snap skid

Nov 25, 2013 - 4:09 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The sliding Winnipeg Jets will try to put the brakes on their longest losing streak of the season as they visit the New Jersey Devils for Monday's clash at the Prudential Center.

The Jets won a season-high four in a row from Nov. 8-15, but they have since lost four in a row to post the club's worst slide since an 0-5-0 stretch from March 28-April 4.

Winnipeg has managed to record two points during its current slide, going 0-2-2, but the club also failed to win a single game on its recent three-game homestand. The Jets completed the stay at MTS Center on Saturday, dropping a 3-2 shootout decision to the Minnesota Wild.

Charlie Coyle's tally in the fourth round of the shootout sent the Wild to Saturday's win. After Minnesota netminder Niklas Backstrom turned away Devin Setoguchi, Coyle snaked his way through the zone and managed to pull Ondrej Pavelec to the left post while he slid the puck inside the far pipe to end the contest.

Michal Frolik and Matt Halischuk scored in regulation for the Jets, while Pavelec finished with 33 stops in the loss.

"I thought we played a pretty good game I thought we for the most part we got a good effort from a lot of players and as you can see winning and losing is determined by a fine line for us," noted Jets head coach Claude Noel.

After falling to 7-6-3 on home ice with Saturday's shootout defeat, the Jets will begin a six-game road trip on Monday. Winnipeg is just 3-5-1 as the visiting club in 2013-14.

The Devils are home for two straight after suffering a defeat in the finale of a three-game road trip with Saturday's 2-1 regulation setback in San Jose. New Jersey began the swing with consecutive overtime wins in Anaheim and Los Angeles before losing a close one in San Jose.

The Sharks scored twice to take a 2-0 lead in the opening period and New Jersey was never able to catch up after that. Patrik Elias scored the lone goal for the Devils, who had a three-game winning streak snapped.

Martin Brodeur stopped 28 shots in the loss and was part of a scary moment late in the third period. Brodeur was hit in the back of the neck with a shot off the stick of Brent Burns with 1:31 left in the game. The 41-year-old goaltender remained down on the ice, but was conscious throughout the ordeal and stayed in the game until he was pulled in favor of an extra attacker.

"I got a shot right in the back of my neck. I felt a little woozy, I guess. My whole body went numb there for a second so I wasn't sure if I wanted to move or not," he said. "Right now it's just sore so hopefully it's not bad. I feel fine now, I'm just kind of a little sore in the neck."

Cory Schneider is expected to get the start in net on Monday and is 2-5-3 this season despite posting a superb 1.87 goals against average and .925 save percentage. Brodeur is 7-4-2 with a 2.06 GAA and .917 save percentage.

Next up for New Jersey is Wednesday's game against Carolina, as the clubs begin a home-and-home series. The Devils are 4-2-2 on home ice this season and 5-7-3 as the guest.

The Jets have won three of the last four meetings against the Devils, but New Jersey has taken six of the past seven meetings as the host.
