Thomas, Panthers handle streaking Flyers

Nov 26, 2013 - 6:31 AM Sunrise, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Tim Thomas stopped 38 shots as the Florida Panthers handled the Philadelphia Flyers 3-1 on Monday.

Sean Bergenheim scored twice while Erik Gudbranson added a goal and an assist for the Panthers, who were back at home after a 2-2-1 road trip.

Wayne Simmonds scored for the Flyers, who had won six of seven coming into the contest. Steve Mason gave up all three goals on 31 shots in the loss.

"We were warned not to take the lightly and we didn't listen," said Mason. "They have a lot of young guys over there who have some jump to their game and they took it to us tonight."

After a scoreless first period, the Flyers had a great opportunity to go ahead as a pair of penalties to Florida saw the team get a 5-on-3 power play, but the defense kept the puck on the outside, and Thomas made the saves when shots got through.

Shortly after the second penalty expired, the Panthers went on top as Bergenheim wrapped the puck around from the left side and his second whack at it went in at 3:35.

"That was really big killing off that power play," said Thomas. "We've been working on that because we know how huge special teams are, and it helped us win the game."

Skating on the power play, Marcel Goc snapped a shot on net from the left circle that was tipped in by Bergenheim for a 2-0 lead with 6:01 left in the second.

The Flyers finally got on the board at 7:06 of the third on the power play. Claude Giroux sent a pass from the left boards to the inside left circle where Scott Hartnell ripped a one-timer on net. Thomas made the save, but Simmonds was at the left side to clean up the rebound and make it a 2-1 game.

The Panthers, though, got the goal back with 4:08 to play as Gudbranson's shot from the high slot hit off a body in front and popped over Mason, trickling into the net before the goaltender could recover.
