Islanders host Jets seeking to get on track
Nov 27, 2013 - 4:11 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The floundering New York Islanders will try to halt a three-game slide when they host the Winnipeg Jets in Wednesday's clash at Nassau Coliseum. The Islanders have not only dropped three straight in regulation, but the club is also sporting a 2-8-0 mark over its last 10 trips to the ice. The November swoon has dropped New York to 8-13-3 on the season and has the Isles in last place in the Metropolitan Division.
New York last played on Saturday when it was handed a 5-2 loss in Philadelphia. The setback came in the finale of what turned out to be a winless three-game road trip for the Isles, who are opening a four-game homestand tonight.
After a scoreless opening 20 minutes, the Isles fell behind 3-0 in the first few minutes of the second period. New York would score the game's next two goals, but could never overcome the 3-0 deficit.
"It really put us behind the eight-ball," Islanders captain John Tavares said of falling behind 3-0. "And it's going to be tough to win any hockey game in this league when we have some meltdowns and some breakdowns like that after five minutes there, and it really hurt us."
Tavares and Eric Boulton scored for the Islanders. Kevin Poulin was chased after Philly beat him three times in the first four minutes of the second period. Anders Nilsson finished up by stopping 12-of-13 shots.
The Isles hope their recent success against the Jets can translate into a win on Wednesday. New York has taken two straight meetings versus Winnipeg and is 5-0-1 over the last five encounters between the clubs.
The Jets have lost two of their three trips to Long Island since the franchise relocated from Atlanta to Winnipeg prior to the 2011-12 campaign.
While New York aims to halt a slide on Wednesday, Winnipeg is out to record a second straight win after snapping a four-game skid Monday in New Jersey.
The Jets posted a 3-1 decision over the Devils to end their losing streak at the start of a six-game road trip. Ondrej Pavelec made 25 saves to help Winnipeg down New Jersey, while Evander Kane, Devin Setoguchi and Mark Scheifele all scored for the Jets. Dustin Byfuglien had two assists in the win.
"We need every win we can get," said Pavelec. "We're going to be on the road a lot for the next couple weeks so this was a good start."
After Monday's victory, the Jets are 4-5-1 as the road club this season. Next up on the swing is Friday's game in Philadelphia.
