Blackhawks edge Stars in extended shootout
Nov 30, 2013 - 8:18 AM Dallas, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Ben Smith scored the game-winner in the 11th round of the shootout as the Chicago Blackhawks outlasted the Dallas Stars, 2-1, at American Airlines Center. After the first three shooters came up empty in the shootout, Chicago's Patrick Sharp beat Kari Lehtonen with a slick backhand-forehand move, but Rich Peverley answered for the Stars at the other end.
The next 16 shooters were all turned away before Smith skated in and ended the game with a wicked wrister over the glove of Lehtonen that sent Chicago to its fifth straight victory.
"I've never been that deep before, but it was entertaining the goalies were outstanding," said Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville.
Sharp tied the game 7:21 into the third period to force overtime, while Corey Crawford registered 28 saves for the Blackhawks.
Peverley potted Dallas' lone goal and Lehtonen posted 25 saves for the Stars, who have lost three of their last four games.
Peverley put the Stars on top late in the first when Crawford misplayed the puck behind his own net and Shawn Horcoff dug the disc free before feeding a cutting Peverley for a one-timer from between the circles that made it 1-0 with 3:20 left in the first.
Following a scoreless second stanza, Chicago pulled even under 7 1/2 minutes into the third when defenseman Duncan Keith pinched in along the left boards to keep the puck in the Dallas zone before throwing a shot on net that Sharp deflected through Lehtonen's five-hole to tie the game with 7:21 left.
Neither offense managed much in overtime, with each team registering just one shot apiece in the extra session to send the tilt to a shootout.
"When you lose one like that it hurts. But to know you got a point and played them as tough as you did you can take something away from that," said Stars coach Lindy Ruff.
Game Notes
Chicago's Patrick Kane had his 12-game point streak snapped ... Chicago has won six straight over Dallas ... Both teams finished 0-for-1 on the power play ... Stars defenseman Stephane Robidas broke his leg during the second period.
