Blackhawks finish successful trip by downing Coyotes
Dec 1, 2013 - 6:13 AM Glendale, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Patrick Kane and Marian Hossa both had a goal and an assist Saturday and the Chicago Blackhawks pushed their winning streak to six games with a 5-2 decision over the Phoenix Coyotes.Andrew Shaw, Niklas Hjalmarsson and Brandon Bollig also scored and Antti Raanta made 32 saves in his second career start while Corey Crawford got the night off.
The Blackhawks went 6-1 on a seven-game road trip, winning out after a loss to Colorado on Nov. 19. They have an NHL-best 44 points.
Rob Klinkhammer and Martin Hanzal scored for the Coyotes, who have lost three straight at home but still own a 9-2-2 record in their building. Mike Smith gave up four goals on 35 shots.
Kane redirected Hossa's slap shot from the high left side for a power play goal 2:34 into the game.
The Blackhawks built a 3-0 lead in the first period after goals by Shaw on a backhand at 9:18 and Hjalmarsson from the high slot 1:46 later.
"A great start. It could have been our best period to start a game all year," said Chicago coach Joel Quenneville. "We loved the energy. We loved the pace."
Phoenix rebounded with a pair of goals in the second period, but any thought of a comeback was squashed by two Blackhawks goals in the third.
Coyotes coach Dave Tippett said his team can learn from losses like this one.
"That's a good lesson for our team -- how hard you have to play, how smart you have to play to beat an elite team," Tippett said.
Klinkhammer got them on the board 5:52 into the second period when he jammed the puck in after it caromed off the end boards on a long shot and Hanzal tipped in a Radim Vrbata pass through the crease on a power play at 15:56.
But Bollig scored on a wrist shot from the left circle midway through the third period and Hossa sealed the win with an empty netter in the final minute.
