Pavelski lifts Sharks past Ducks in SO
Dec 1, 2013 - 8:12 AM San Jose, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Joe Pavelski scored in the second round of the shootout to lift the San Jose Sharks over the Anaheim Ducks, 4-3, in a battle for first place in the Pacific Division. Both teams came into Saturday's game with 39 points.
Patrick Marleau had a goal and an assist for the Sharks, who went 5-0-0 on a five-game homestand. Marty Havlat and Logan Couture also lit the lamp.
Antti Niemi stopped 28-of-31 shots in the victory.
Corey Perry, Alex Grant and Ben Lovejoy scored for the Ducks, who had won three of four coming in. Jonas Hiller turned aside 32-of-35 shots.
Trailing 3-1, the Ducks scored twice late in the third period. At the 12:50 mark, Grant fired a shot from the top of the left circle that snuck past Niemi.
Lovejoy made it a 3-3 game with 3:06 remaining when his shot from the left point went through traffic and beat Niemi.
"It was a nice comeback in the third," Grant said. "We talked a lot about that between the second and third periods. It's nice to get a point, but it would've been great to get two."
Each goaltender made two saves in overtime.
In the second round of the shootout, Pavelski skated in hard, came to a quick stop then wristed a shot past Hiller. Niemi stopped Perry in the second round and Kyle Palmieri in the third to secure the victory.
"You don't get a chance to do very much," Pavelski said. "There's only a couple of moves you can do. You stop, the puck keeps moving, slow."
Perry gave the Ducks a 1-0 lead in the first period, but the Sharks roared back to score three times in the second.
Couture's tip-in at the 4:16 mark made it a 1-1 contest.
San Jose took advantage of a big mistake by Hiller to take a 2-1 lead at 10:13. Hiller skated far out of the crease to his right and tried to pass the puck to defenseman Cam Fowler. Marleau picked it off before eventually finding the back of the net for a short-handed goal.
Havlat's backhander increased the Sharks' lead to 3-1 with 57 seconds left in the second frame.
