Maple Leafs nip Stars in OT to halt skid

Dec 6, 2013 - 5:49 AM Toronto, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Trevor Smith netted the game-winner with 42 seconds left in overtime to lift the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 3-2 win over the Dallas Stars on Thursday.

Jake Gardiner fired a shot from just inside the blue line and Smith was there to redirect the disc past Kari Lehtonen for the win.

Nazem Kadri added a pair of goals and Phil Kessel notched two assists for the Maple Leafs, who had dropped five straight entering the contest.

Jonathan Bernier turned aside 48 shots in the win.

"I'm a little tired," Bernier joked after the win.

Shawn Horcoff had one goal and an assist and Erik Cole added a goal for the Stars, losers in three of their last four. Lehtonen allowed all three goals on 24 shots.

The Stars also saw defenseman Trevor Daley get helped off the ice in the second period after sliding into the end boards.

"It is going to be nothing that is going to be short-term," Stars head coach Lindy Ruff said of the injury.

Kadri scored just 58 seconds into the middle session to give the Leafs a 1-0 lead. Jay Clement skated into the Dallas zone on a 2-on-1 rush, but was taken out by a Stars defender. The pair slammed into the end boards and Kessel came up with the loose puck and flipped it to James van Riemsdyk, who found Kadri streaking to the net for an easy goal.

Cole lit the lamp 1:52 into the third period. Valeri Nichushkin dropped the puck back to Horcoff, who sent a cross-ice pass to Cole. Bernier was unable to recover before Cole stuffed the disc into the back of the net.

Kadri's second marker of the game came five minutes later as he redirected Cody Franson's shot from just above the right circle.

Horcoff tied the game at 17:14 after tipping in Kevin Connauton's offering.
