Canucks top Coyotes in overtime

Dec 7, 2013 - 7:18 AM Vancouver, BC (SportsNetwork.com) - Christopher Higgins scored at 3:41 of overtime to lift the Vancouver Canucks to a 3-2 win over the Phoenix Coyotes.

Jason Garrison and Henrik Sedin also scored for the Canucks, who have won three straight and four of their last five. Roberto Luongo stopped 37 shots in the win.

David Moss and Antoine Vermette scored for the Coyotes, who have dropped six of their last eight. Mike Smith allowed all three goals on 32 shots.

"There were some parts of our game I thought were all right," said Phoenix coach Dave Tippett said. "We're trying to defend better, and we're giving up less shots and less chances against. But going into the trip, this game is about winning and getting points. We got only got three of six and for where we are, we need a better percentage than that."

The winning goal came on a rush as Higgins skated in down the left wing and beat Smith with a wrister from the left circle for his eighth goal of the season.

After a scoreless first period, the Canucks took a 1-0 lead at 1:26 of the second period while on the power play as Dan Hamhuis sent a pass from the left point to the right where Garrison one-timed the puck in.

It was a 2-0 lead for Vancouver as a turnover in the Phoenix end saw Ryan Stanton slip the puck to Daniel Sedin, who then sent it to his brother at the right circle for a one-timer with 53.3 seconds to play in the second.

Phoenix made it a 2-1 game at 10:34 of the third as Vermette beat Luongo with a slap shot, and Moss scored just over two minutes later when he jammed the puck in during a scrum in front.

"It's happened to us before and our confidence level didn't bend there, that's good for us. We overcame it and got the win"
