Coyotes cap road trip with win in Denver
Dec 11, 2013 - 5:03 AM Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Antoine Vermette notched a pair of goals to help Phoenix take down Colorado, 3-1, at Pepsi Center.Jordan Szwarz also tallied and Thomas Greiss stopped 29 shots for the Coyotes, who completed a four-game road trip at 2-1-1.
"We got a couple changes when they couldn't and it paid off in the second period," said Coyotes head coach Dave Tippett. "This was a good balanced game by our guys all around."
Semyon Varlamov made 22 saves for the Avalanche, whose lone offense came on a Patrick Bordeleau tally late in the second period.
Vermette pumped home a power-play goal at 8:31 of the second period when he redirected a Keith Yandle offering from the left side.
The Coyotes enjoyed a 2-0 edge at 12:06 after Szwarz followed up a line rush and tapped home a Jeff Halpern rebound from the right side.
Bordeleau lucked into Colorado's only score of the contest. He pressured Coyotes defenseman Michael Stone behind the Phoenix net to the right on Greiss, and the attempted clear caromed off Greiss' skate and crossed the goal line.
Vermette's tally with 4:27 remaining in the second sealed it for the visitors.
Oliver Ekman-Larsson carried the puck around the Avs' net from right to left, then dished between the circles for Mikkel Boedker. The rebound kicked right out to the 10-year veteran, who made no mistake from the right side.
"It's tough to control rebounds. When you do, it creates chances for them," lamented Varlamov. "They charged hard to the net the whole game." I always want to play after a loss, get back to a winning feeling."
Greiss made 12 saves in the third period to maintain the winning two-goal margin.
