Jets edge Blue Jackets

Dec 17, 2013 - 3:57 AM Columbus, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Evander Kane's goal midway through the third period proved to be the difference in the Winnipeg Jets' 3-2 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Monday.

Kane, who also had an assist, returned to the lineup after missing six games with a lower-body injury for the Jets, who snapped a three-game skid. Mark Scheifele and Bryan Little also lit the lamp.

"I put on my skates and I tried to help this team win -- that's just how I am," Kane said.

Al Montoya stopped 22-of-24 shots in the victory.

RJ Umberger and Fedor Tyutin scored for the Blue Jackets, who had won six straight against the Winnipeg franchise.

Mike McKenna turned aside 29-of-32 shots for Columbus, which has lost two in a row.

The Blue Jackets thought they had scored the opening goal in the final minute of the first period. The puck entered the Winnipeg net, but it was determined that Columbus forward Matt Calvert made incidental contact with Montoya.

"I felt I was pushed in and I tried to dodge (Montoya)," Calvert said. "I thought the puck was in the net before I was but it was a situation where the official had to make a quick call."

Scheifele broke a scoreless tie at the 13:59 mark of the middle stanza. Kane carried the puck to the bottom of the left circle before sending a pass to Scheifele.

Little's power-play goal 2:28 into the third stanza made it 2-0 Winnipeg. Dustin Byfuglien's slap shot from the right point was deflected in by Little.

Columbus got on the board at the 8:48 mark when Umberger scored on a wraparound.

Kane gave the Jets a two-goal cushion again at 10:35 when he kept the puck on a 3-on-1 rush.

The Blue Jackets got within one on Tyutin's goal at the 11:39 mark.
