Voracek scores twice as Flyers down Capitals
Dec 18, 2013 - 5:30 AM Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Jakub Voracek scored twice to lead the Philadelphia Flyers to a 5-2 win over the Washington Capitals to cap a home- and-home set.Matt Read posted a goal and an assist while Wayne Simmonds and Mark Streit each scored for the Flyers, who blew a three-goal lead in Sunday's game in Washington and lost the game in the shootout.
Steve Mason turned away 24 shots for Philadelphia, which had dropped four of five coming into the game.
Alex Ovechkin and Eric Fehr scored for the Capitals, who had won four of five. Braden Holtby allowed five goals on 35 shots in the loss.
The Caps took the initial lead in the game as Ovechkin swept the puck in on the backhand from the left side just 40 seconds into the second period on the power play.
Voracek, though, answered less than a minute later as he beat Holtby with a wrister from the right wing on a rush play.
Washington took a 2-1 lead at 5:31 of the middle frame as Troy Brouwer got the puck behind the net and whipped it out to the right circle where Fehr one- timed it home.
The Flyers tied the game at 11:54 of the second as Steve Downie grabbed a rebound in the slot and snapped a pass over to his left where Read one-timed it home.
At 15:17 of the second, Philly was given a five-minute power play as Tom Wilson slammed Brayden Schenn into the boards to the left of the Flyers' net and was handed a charging major.
"To be honest with you, I don't think it was a dirty play," said Ovechkin. "He saw the hit coming, he turned, and Willy (Tom Wilson) is a big boy. It's always dangerous out there, it's hockey. When you get hit, you have to be ready, especially at the boards. I don't think he was ready, I think he was going to turn, but Willy just finished his check."
Schenn left the ice and didn't return, but the Flyers made the Caps pay for the play.
The first goal came at 17:04 as Streit blasted a one-timer from the right point through a screen, and Voracek took a pass at the right circle and took a stride towards the slot before beating Holtby with a low shot for a 4-2 lead with 1:44 to play in the second.
"Obviously it was a turning point in the game so very important for us to capitalize on the five minute major and the guys did a good job," said Philadelphia head coach Craig Berube.
Simmonds made it a three-goal game at 7:29 of the third as he got the puck behind a defender who had just misplayed the disc and slid over to the right before slamming it home.
Mason stopped 12 shots in the third period.
