Ducks roll past slumping Red Wings
Dec 18, 2013 - 5:08 AM Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Jakob Silfverberg scored in his return to the lineup as the red-hot Anaheim Ducks cruised past the Detroit Red Wings by a 5-2 margin on Tuesday.Silfverberg was back in action after a 24-game absence because of a broken hand. Sami Vatanen, Saku Koivu, Corey Perry and Nick Bonino also lit the lamp for the Pacific Division-leading Ducks, who have won six in a row.
Jonas Hiller stopped 16-of-18 shots for the victors.
"We took advantage of a team that was hurting," Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau said. "Listen, we beat Detroit 5-2 in the first game we played them last year, too. How'd it end up? It's just ... that was no way the Detroit Red Wings that you're going to see in January."
Tomas Jurco and Danny Cleary scored for the Red Wings, who have lost six straight.
Jonas Gustavsson turned aside 8-of-11 shots before being pulled late in the first period. Petr Mrazek stopped 17-of-19 shots in relief.
The Red Wings scored the game's first goal at 3:15 of the first period. Drew Miller controlled the puck at the left point before sending a pass to Jurco, who used a backhander to beat Hiller for his first NHL goal.
"I liked how we started," Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said. "Things were going pretty good for about three minutes. Obviously, it didn't go very well for us. They shot the puck in the net and we lost momentum very fast and didn't have a very good effort from that point on."
Then the wheels came off for Detroit. Silfverberg got the Ducks on the board just 25 seconds later when Francois Beauchemin's shot from the right point hit off the end boards and ended up on the stick of Silfverberg for a goal.
Bonino gave Anaheim a 2-1 lead at the 5:29 mark. Daniel Winnik carried the puck around the net before finding Bonino in front.
The Ducks went ahead by two goals at 18:17 when Perry's shot from the right circle got past Gustavsson.
Mrazek came off the bench to replace Gustavsson, but his luck was the same. Vatanen's one-timer from the top of the right circle found the back of the net with one second remaining.
Koivu lit the lamp at 12:26 of the middle stanza to make it 5-1.
Cleary scored with 1:58 left in the third to account for the final margin.
