Ducks set franchise record with rally past Islanders
Dec 22, 2013 - 4:18 AM Uniondale, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Kyle Palmieri potted the game-winner as part of a four-goal third period and Ryan Getzlaf recorded a hat trick to lead the Anaheim Ducks to a 5-3 win over the New York Islanders on Saturday.Mathieu Perreault added a goal and Frederik Andersen stopped 18 shots for the Ducks, who have won a franchise-record eight straight games.
"He was the catalyst, for sure. He wasn't going to be denied," said Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau.
Anaheim had taken seven in a row earlier this season, from Oct. 5-20 and previously from Feb. 20-Mar. 7, 1999.
Thomas Vanek scored twice and Frans Nielson added a goal for the Islanders, losers in 14 of their last 16 games.
"The main focus tonight was the discipline and the decision-making with the puck, with the size of the guys they have," Islanders coach Jack Capuano said. "They can wear you down, and they have some offensive [defensemen] who can jump into the play and give you problems."
Evgeni Nabokov allowed four goals on 30 shots in the setback.
Getzlaf pulled the Ducks within 3-2 just 1:10 into the third. Bryan Allen fired a shot from the point that bounced off of Nabokov right to Corey Perry, who was also turned away. Getzlaf, though, managed to corral the puck in traffic and beat Nabokov, who had his sight blocked by several players gathered in front of the net.
Perreault tied things up after finishing off a slick passing sequence at 10:32. Matt Beleskey skated along the right board and flipped the puck to Daniel Winnik on the goal line short of the net. Winnik then quickly backhanded the disc right to Perreault, who easily shoveled it into a nearly empty net.
Palmieri put the Ducks in front for the first time all game with his goal at 13:44. Off a draw won by Getzlaf, Palmieri weaved through traffic before firing a wrister into the back of the net.
Getzlaf added an empty-netter for his hat trick and a two-goal spread with 22 seconds on the clock.
As time expired the benches cleared as a group of players held a shoving match near center ice. It was unclear what sparked the near-fracas, but referees separated the sides. After several minutes of jawing on the ice the teams retreated to the locker room.
Vanek opened the scoring 11:27 in with his snap shot off a Kyle Okposo miss.
Getlaf tied things up 15:10 into the middle session, but Vanek and Nielsen scored less than a minute apart at 17:55 and 18:52 to put the hosts in front 3-1 after 40 minutes.
