Bruins rip Sens behind Smith, Rask

Dec 28, 2013 - 4:48 AM Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Reilly Smith netted a pair of goals and Tuukka Rask stopped 33 shots, as Boston shut down Ottawa, 5-0, in the opener of a home-and-home set from TD Garden.

David Krejci, Jarome Iginla and Brad Marchand also lit the lamp for the Bruins, who have won three straight eight of 10 overall thanks to a four-goal final frame.

Patrice Bergeron picked up a pair of assists, while Rask recorded his fourth shutout of the season.

Robin Lehner was shelled for all five scores on 42 shots in defeat for the Senators, who have dropped four of five.

"I don't know what to say," Lehner lamented. "Twenty good minutes and 40 bad ones."

These clubs meet on Saturday in Canada's capital.

Lehner hugged the right post to deny a Krejci backhander inside of a minute played in the third, but seconds later, on the same shift, the Czech was not denied from the same spot with a forehander and 2-0 Bruins edge.

Smith provided a three-goal spread for the hosts by finishing off a 2-on-1 break with a one-timer from the right side off a Marchand pass with 9:40 to play.

Smith scored again with 2:34 to play and Marchand demonstrated the hosts' drive in the late stages when he scored with 27 seconds left to cap the rout.

"He's been a good player from day one," Bruins head coach Claude Julien said of Smith. "He's just starting to showcase what he's capable of doing."

Rask was sharp in the first period, making 15 saves while his counterpart had it relatively easy with five stops.

Iginla snapped the scoreless deadlock on a Boston power play with 3:31 remaining in the second period. Lehner made a kick save on a point drive by Milan Lucic, but the rebound slid out to the ex-Flame for his 11th goal of the season.

It was the only mistake the Ottawa netminder made, as he halted the other 19 shots the Bruins sent his way.
