Fehr's late tally lifts Capitals over Rangers

Dec 28, 2013 - 3:54 AM Washington, DC (SportsNetwork.com) - Eric Fehr scored the game-winner late in the third period as the Washington Capitals took a 3-2 victory over the New York Rangers on Friday.

Fehr had a goal overturned in the second period, but gave the team the lead with 5:09 to play for the Capitals, who had dropped four of six coming in. Nicklas Backstrom and Mike Green also scored, while Philipp Grubauer stopped 38 shots in the win.

Carl Hagelin and Benoit Pouliot scored for the Rangers, who had won their previous two coming in. Cam Talbot made 31 saves in defeat.

"It was definitely a hard fought game by both teams," said New York head coach Alain Vigneault. "I thought five on five I really liked the way we competed tonight."

The Rangers tied the game while shorthanded just 17 seconds into the third as Hagelin skated in on a breakaway and deked to the backhand to open Grubauer's pads and slip the puck in.

Fehr, though, gave his team a 3-2 lead with 5:09 left in the game as he ripped a shot from the top of the right circle that beat Talbot to the far side. He had been given a goal at 9:50 of the second, but a review overturned the call.

"Last year by far he was our most versatile player," said Washington head coach Adam Oates about Fehr. "His offensive reads, he has a great stick - he is kind of an opportunist player. The goal tonight, maybe caught the goalie off guard, and he almost had one in the second on the power play."

Washington scored on the power play at 6:55 of the first as Green's huge one- timer from the high slot found the back of the net for his third of the season.

The Rangers tied the game 1:37 into the second as Brad Richards threw a shot on net from the right circle that Pouliot got a stick on for his sixth of the year.

Despite having a goal overturned later in the second, Washington took a 2-1 lead into the third period as Backstrom grabbed the disc behind a defender at the right point and skated down to the circle before snapping a shot into the far side with 1:05 left in the frame.
