Ducks put 9-game win streak on line vs. Coyotes
Dec 28, 2013 - 3:55 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Anaheim Ducks aim to extend their club-record winning streak to 10 games when they host the Phoenix Coyotes in Saturday's Pacific Division clash at Honda Center. The Ducks have won nine in a row to record the NHL's longest winning streak since Pittsburgh claimed 15 straight victories from March 2-30 of last season. Anaheim's point streak of 12 games (10-0-2) is also the league's longest since the Pens went on their epic winning streak in March.
Anaheim also enters Saturday's clash on a three-game home winning streak and the Ducks have still yet to lose in regulation this season in Orange County, going 13-0-2 as the host.
The Ducks' last four wins all came on the road, including a 3-2 regulation win in their last outing on Monday against the Washington Capitals. Hampus Lindholm's tally late in the third period sent Anaheim to a 3-2 victory over the Capitals in Bruce Boudreau's return to Washington.
Boudreau had served as Caps head coach from November of 2007 through November of 2011, and was named to Anaheim's post only two days after being dumped.
"In the whole scheme of things, I'm happier that we kept the streak alive," said Boudreau of his homecoming.
Saku Koivu and Andrew Cogliano registered a goal and assist each for the Ducks. Jonas Hiller needed to make just 17 stops to run his record to 16-4-4.
"We're just trying to stay the course and play our game," Hiller said of the team's success. "I think that's the strength right now and it's great that it worked out again tonight."
Anaheim has a good chance to keep its streak alive tonight, as the Ducks are 3-0 against the Coyotes this season and have won for of five overall in the series. Phoenix is 0-1-1 at the Honda Center this season and has lost five of its past six tilts in Orange County.
Hiller has been in net for all three wins this season over the Coyotes, posting a 1.95 goals against average and .941 save percentage.
Phoenix heads to Anaheim after going past regulation for a fourth game in a row. It has lost three of those games, including a 4-3 setback in a shootout to the San Jose Sharks on Friday night.
David Moss scored twice in regulation and Radim Vrbata tied the game for Phoenix with 6:25 left in regulation, but Mike Smith gave up two goals in the tiebreaker after stopping 28 saves through overtime.
"It was a very competitive game. We played a much better game than our last one," Phoenix coach Dave Tippett said. "It was a fast-paced, entertaining game that came down to one shot in a shootout."
The Coyotes have lost five of their past six overall and may give backup Thomas Greiss the start tonight.
Greiss is 4-2-0 with a 2.20 GAA in eight games this season, including five starts, and has gone 0-2-1 with a 2.14 GAA in five lifetime encounters with the Ducks, making three starts.
Greiss faced Anaheim once this season in a relief role on Nov. 23, stopping all four shots faced in 19 minutes of work.
