Ott boosts Buffalo over Washington in SO

Dec 30, 2013 - 3:46 AM Buffalo, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Steve Ott scored the game-winner in the sixth round of the shootout to lead the Buffalo Sabres in a 2-1 win over the Washington Capitals at First Niagara Center.

After the first 10 shooters missed, Ott blasted the puck over the right shoulder of Philipp Grubauer before Ryan Miller turned back Mike Green to end the game.

Miller stopped 49 shots in regulation and overtime and all six in the shootout for the Sabres, who have won four straight at home.

"It feels good when they stay out and get a win like that," said Miller.

Drew Stafford scored the only goal in regulation for Buffalo.

Troy Brouwer tallied the lone goal for the Capitals, who have lost three of their last four contests.

"Miller was playing well and we feel like we deserved to win tonight but you encounter some games that just don't go your way," said Brouwer.

Despite having a 30-11 shot deficit through two periods, the Sabres lit the lamp first. Christian Ehrhoff threw a wrister in front of the net from the boards and Stafford redirected it in traffic to score the first goal of the game with 1:42 to play in the second.

The Capitals kept slinging the puck at Miller in the third period, and one finally got through.

After a bad turnover by Ott, Brouwer one-timed a cross-ice pass from Mikhail Grabovski that went over Miller's blocker to tie the game at 1-1 with 14:26 left.

Washington had a 50-17 shot advantage, but had just one goal to show for it thanks to Miller's performance.
