Ducks crush Sharks
Jan 1, 2014 - 7:24 AM Anaheim, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Ryan Getzlaf posted a goal and two assists as the Anaheim Ducks took a 6-3 victory over the San Jose Sharks to close a home-and-home set.Matt Beleskey and Nick Bonino each posted a goal and an assist for the Ducks, who dropped the opener of this set in San Jose, 3-1, on Sunday that saw a franchise-best 10-game winning streak stopped. Jonas Hiller made 33 saves in the win.
Dan Boyle, Bracken Kearns and Logan Couture all scored for the Sharks, who had won four straight coming into the game.
Antti Niemi was pulled in the third period as he gave up five goals on 34 shots. Alex Stalock allowed a goal on four shots the rest of the way.
"We had a good push, and then nothing would come out of it and boom they score, but I think we came out with early energy, but the second period we just got out played, it killed the game plan," said San Jose center Joe Thornton.
Kyle Palmieri's tip-in at 16:24 of the first period accounted for the only goal of the frame to give Anaheim the lead, but San Jose tied the game 35 seconds into the second on Boyle's power-play goal, a tip-in of a Joe Pavelski shot in front.
Francois Beauchemin made it a 2-1 game for the Ducks at the 11-minute mark with his first of the season, but Couture answered 1:35 later with his 12th of the season.
Anaheim, though, took a 4-2 lead into the third on a power-play goal from Bonino at 14:59, and Beleskey's backhander from in front at 18:30.
"We came out with a one-goal lead after one against a pretty good hockey team," said Getzlaf. "We caught a break at the end of the period, and that was good for our group. We came out the way we wanted to in the second period."
The Ducks scored two more goals in quick succession to start the third as Getzlaf got one through on a slap shot at 1:14, and a shorthanded goal by Andrew Cogliano just 1:11 later.
Kearns scored on the same power play at 3:16 off a feed from Matthew Irwin to cap the scoring in the game.
