Pavelski, Sharks down Oilers

Jan 3, 2014 - 7:16 AM San Jose, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Joe Pavelski finished the game with a goal and an assist as the San Jose Sharks took a 5-1 win over the Edmonton Oilers.

Patrick Marleau, Bracken Kearns, Logan Couture and Brent Burns all scored for the Sharks, who have won five of their last six games. Antti Niemi stopped 23 shots in the win.

"The role players played some really good rolls tonight," Sharks head coach Todd McLellan said.

Nail Yakupov scored the only goal of the game for the Oilers, who have dropped their past three games. Devan Dubnyk gave up all five goals on 36 shots.

The Sharks scored at 14:37 of the first period, as Burns took a pass from Pavelski and one-timer it home from the right circle.

Just 49 seconds later, the Sharks made it a 2-0 game as Marleau scored his 18th of the year on a snap shot from the slot.

"We were playing fine until that second goal," Edmonton head coach Dallas Eakins said.

San Jose took a 3-0 lead at 7:18 of the second period as the puck slid down from the left point to the slot on a broken pass and Kearns' turnaround shot found the back of the net.

It was a 4-0 game at 8:45 as Couture was sprung on a breakaway and he blasted a slapper into the right corner for his 13th of the year.

Edmonton got on the board at 15:39 of the second period, as Yakupov's turnaround shot from the insidle left circle fooled Niemi.

The Sharks, got the goal back at 5:44 of the third as Pavelski's one-timer from the right circle off a feed from Joe Thornton along the boards.

Game Notes

San Jose hits the road for its next three games, starting in Colorado on Saturday ... Edmonton plays in Anaheim on Friday to wrap up a three-game road trip ... San Jose has won six straight against Edmonton, including two matchups this season ... Both teams went 0-for-3 on the power play.
